Music Monday

Egads! It's been too long since my last post...In this one I must wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and tell you that Everly had a show in L.A. in support of Team True Beauty and their first annual celebration. In fact, this Music Monday blog is going to be dedicated to that very special Team True Beauty Event.

My absolute and most favorite part about being a singer/songwriter is found in playing live. Smiling might be Will Ferril's favorite as Buddy the Elf, but performing live is mine. There is nothing like connecting with an audience and having an unrepeatable moment. Everything from the visuals, to the sound, the smells, -- Well, the smells may not always be the greatest. Let's be honest. --  the personalities you encounter, they're all a part of what make each show unique and special.

I was so excited when Team True Beauty asked us to play at their first annual celebration. I was excited because as Everly, we hadn't played in a while and I always love our shows, and also because I appreciate what Team True Beauty is about. We should always be reminded of our value, our beauty, and find resources to help reinforce the truths about who we are, especially when we are in need. I was also excited to be playing in the Bardot room at the Avalon in Hollywood. I knew this venue as The Palace growing up, so it was fun to step in there and fill the atmosphere with our sound with it's updated name. This was such an amazing and vibey place to play. I can't wait to play there again!

That said, I thought it would be fun to share a little bit of what it's like from our end when it comes to live shows.

There's an awful lot that goes into a show, but one of the most important things is making sure you have excellent sound quality. This, of course, is accomplished by a sound check. The guy running sound for this event was truly amazing. He knew what he was doing and was quick on his feet. Without him, all of us that night would have sounded awful! So, all of the performers filed in hours before the event for our various sound checks and then we all filed out to do whatever we needed to do before the event actually started. At about 4 o'clock I made my way back to the venue for a red carpet event in which I did some interviews and talked about Everly & Team True Beauty.

(Here's one of the interviews I did for VelveTV Online)

Once that was done, I made my way upstairs to the meet & greet room. It was so incredible to hear all the ways in which our music has touched your lives and to see your faces in person. It was truly an honor.

Thank you to the fan that posted this, whoever you are!!
Then came the music. There were some wonderful and incredibly talented bands that played that night. It always amazes me how much talent there is condensed in a location like Los Angeles. We went on after a wonderful speech by Shantel VanSanten (who carries with her such generosity and compassion for others...she's amazing!) We brought our pal and beats expert, Joe Mengis, with us. (You can read more about him if you click on the Music Monday label) It was so much fun to have a broken down set with just our voices, an acoustic guitar, and a broken down drum kit.

There were so many highlights for me during our set, but one of my favorite moments was singing Home Is Me You Are Mine. It's been a long time since we've played that song live and it moves me every time we do. To me, it's like singing a prayer, declaring and reminding those who willingly give up their lives to serve that we are with them, and we honor them. Another one of my personal favorites is Mirror. It might be because I get to rap in it. (Insert cheesy smile)
Our set flew by and before we knew it, we were done and moving our stuff off stage so we could mingle a bit more and say hello to all of you.

Joe, me, Savanna Outen & her band.
After we were done, it was a true privilege to get to listen to the rest of the amazing acts, including another Portlander, Savannah Outen. Watch out for this girl, because she's got some chops. And let's not leave out Daphne Zuniga's inspiring speech. She has such grace and eloquence in any given moment.

I got to spend some time connecting with Meriam Bouarrouj, one of the founders of Team True Beauty. This girl has an incredible passion for life. I look forward to seeing all the ways she'll impact our world.

Another one of the amazing performers that night was Jessie Payo. This girl can SAAANG!! She's another one you all need to keep an eye on, because she's got some pipes and writes some great tunes.

I finally found myself exhausted and ready to crawl into bed, so me and my friends said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel. I was rather grateful that we didn't have to get on a bus and head to another location for a show the next day, but now that I've had a couple of days to catch up on my sleep, I'm itching for another show to write about. That day will be soon, so stay tuned!

I can't say thank you enough to all of you who support Everly, and I must say again a big thank you to Team True Beauty for having us along to celebrate the completion of your first year inspiring us to look beyond the skin and discover where our beauty comes from!

God bless you all!

Great blog. Well worth the wait. I'm still really bummed that I don't live in L.A. because it seems I miss all the cool/good stuff, i.e. the TTB event/Everly playing, James Lafferty in the area to do OTH press this week... maybe I can at least bribe you and Joy like with coffee to come to my hometown one of these days? ;) :)
